Richard creates a nurturing space where you can explore ideas while being supported by his rich understanding of both film and TV structure. I gained so much clarity as well as a new-found confidence that led to the film I currently have on the festival circuit. Working with Richard really changed the course of my screenwriting and he remains a mentor in my life.
Richard's understanding of structure, character and everything else it takes to put a story onto the page reveal the daunting task of writing a screenplay to be intuitive and fun! I still hear many of Richard's insights everytime I sit down to write - the sign of a great teacher. For writers at any level, if you can get a seat in Richard's writing group I recommend taking it without hesitation.
Richard's program inspired me to ask the right questions of myself as a writer. He worked into the rigours of screenwriting through passion and a deft command of the craft. His writer's program set me up for the hunt to uncover the best way to tell my story.
Richard Barrett, I think it's fair to say, is the most important instructor I've had in the art of screenwriting and writing in general. His program gave me the guiding principles in structure and storytelling that I use to this day. Not long after completing Richard's course, I wrote a play which was chosen to be workshopped by the Australian Theatre Company in Los Angeles.
Richard articulated the symmetry present in the construction of quality scripts, emphasizing, among other things, the importance of the midpoint and inciting incident. He helped break down each scene into its beginning, middle and end, giving my screenwriting a greater depth and cohesiveness from the most micro level, zooming out to the macro.
